Hiking tour in the Windau

An easy yet extended circuit hike which has a very special appeal, for instance the crystal-clear mountain lake and babbling mountain streams, the chapel on the summit and a dreamy panorama, a wonderful scenic descent past the Rotwandalm.

  • Ascent approx. 3 hours
  • Descent approx. 2 1/2 hours
  • Altitude difference: 1400m
  • Highest point: Kröndelhorn 2444m

Short route outline

From Steinberghaus the road proceeds for around 5 km into the valley to Baumgartenalm. There are signposts here which offer two routes to the Kröndelhorn. Follow the red signposts to take the hiking trail through ferns, alpine roses and bilberry bushes. After around 2 1/2 hours you get to the Reinkarsee at 2194m, a precursor to the summit. The lake has a very small rest area. From here it is just 30 minutes to the summit of the Kröndelhorn. There is a little chapel at the summit, where the summit book is kept. The extended climb down from the Kröndelhorn really does enhance this hike. Back to the Reinkarsee and bear right, heading for Rotwandalm. The descent is lovely and you are accompanied by the sounds of babbling of the springs and streams. After some 3 hours you get to the valley again. Nothing beats a glass of wine or a cool beer in Steinberghaus!
